Rotary International and Sanofi Pasteur to Raise Global Awareness for Polio Eradication at NYSE Euronext.

Today executives and guests of Rotary International and vaccine-producer Sanofi Pasteur will visit the NYSE Euronext Amsterdam to draw global attention to Rotary's ongoing effort to eradicate polio. This same day, representatives of the two organizations will also take part in NYSE Euronext bell ceremonies in New York, Lisbon, Brussels, and Paris.

On Thursday 23 February, to celebrate its 106th birthday, Rotary will project the slogan END POLIO NOW onto the building housing the upper chamber of the Dutch parliament. END POLIO NOW is part of Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio. Similar actions will take place at other prominent buildings around the world on the same day, to highlight the fact that the disease has almost been eradicated, but that a final push is needed to achieve that goal.

Rotary is a global organisation with a network of more than 1.2 million dedicated volunteers in over 200 countries. The Netherlands has 485 clubs with approximately 20,000 members. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio since 1988.

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of the Sanofi-aventis Group, is the world's largest company focused entirely on human vaccines. Sanofi Pasteur has played a major role in the effort to push polio to the brink of eradication by supplying oral polio vaccine to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, of which Rotary is a spearheading partner, along with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.

Vandaag, 23 februari 2011 op de 106de verjaardag van Rotary, vragen Rotarians wereldwijd aandacht voor het laatste zetje dat nodig is om het poliovirus de wereld uit te helpen. Is het haalbaar? Ja, het ligt binnen ons bereik! We hebben de haven in zicht. We zijn er bijna…

Rotary is er al meer dan 25 jaar mee bezig. Met het uitbannen van kinderverlamming. We kunnen het niet alleen. We doen het samen met organisaties als de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie , met UNICEF –het kinderfonds van de Verenigde Naties - , de Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, de U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention en ook ons eigen RIVM speelt er een rol bij. Wwe maken gebruik van de kennis en kunde van vaccinproducenten zoals Sanofi Pasteur. We hebben al reuzenstappen gemaakt. We hebben de eindstreep in zicht. We zijn er bijna…

In 1988 telden we nog zo’n 1.000 nieuwe poliogevallen per dag. Anno nu hebben we minder dan 1.000 gevallen per jaar! Er zijn nog maar vier landen waar het poliovirus slachtoffers maakt: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria en Pakistan. We hebben de slag al voor 99% gewonnen. Maar die ene procent is een moeilijk te nemen horde. De bel voor de laatste ronde heeft geklonken. We zien de finishvlag, we zijn er bijna…

We stoppen er tijd, menskracht en geld in. Gelukkig staan we niet alleen. De Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation heeft de polioactie van Rotary al geholpen met meer dan 1 miljard dollar. In januari 2011 hebben de Britse Premier Cameron en de Kroonprins van Abu Dhabi met alweer Bill Gates nog eens gezamenlijk 200 miljoen dollar extra toegezegd. Wij, Nederlandse Rotarians, vinden dat de Nederlandse regering niet achter kan blijven. We zijn zo dichtbij het verwezenlijken van onze droom. We zijn er bijna…

We trekken de aandacht door de gong te slaan - bij de opening van de aandelenbeurzen bij NYSE/Euronext. In Nederland zijn we zeer ingenomen met de ondersteuning die onze END POLIO NOW Ambassadeur Peter Timofeeff ons geeft. Vanavond projecteren wij het END POLIO NOW beeldmerk op het gebouw van de Eerste Kamer in Den Haag. Als signaal aan de Nederlandse burger en het bedrijfsleven: steun Rotary bij het uitroeien van het ziekmakende poliovirus. Maar ook als noodkreet naar onze politici. Onze boodschap aan hen is: blijf niet achter, doe net als de Britse regering. Draag substantieel bij. We zijn er bijna…, we zijn er bijna…, maar nog niet helemaal!

We are this close…

Today is the 106th anniversary of Rotary. Worldwide we draw the attention of the public for the essential final step to end polio. Is it feasible? Yes, we are this close...

It has kept us busy for more than 25 years now. We cannot achieve it on our own. We cannot do without organizations as WHO, UNICEF, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RIVM and the know how of vaccine producers like Sanofi Pasteur. We can see the finish line. We are this close...

In 1988 1.000 cases a day, now 1.000 a year. There are not more than four countries left. We achieved 99% already. The last one % is a difficult hurdle. We can see the finish flag. We are this close...

We donate our time, manpower and money. But we are not left alone. The Gates Foundation donated more than 1 billion dollars already, In January British Prime Minister Cameron, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and - again - Bill Gates promised to provide another 200 million dollar. We, the Dutch Rotarians, find that the Dutch Government should follow this example. We are so near realizing our dream. We are this close...

We draw the attention by striking the gong at NYSE/Euronext. In NL we are very happy with the support of our END POLIO NOW Ambassador Peter Timofeeff. Tonight we will project the END POLIO NOW logo on our Senate Buiding in The Hague. It is meant as a signal to the public and to potential sponsors: please support Rotary's Polio Eradication Project. But it is also meant as a signal to the Dutch politicians: do what the British Government has done. Support financially in a substantial manner! We are this close… In Dutch, children sing: “We zijn er bijna…, we zijn er bijna…, maar nog niet helemaal!” (‘We are almost there..., we are almost there..., but not completely yet!’)
