MMH Charity concert - November 2017

Mulanje Mission Hospital

Benefit Concert 2017

Friday, November 17th at 19.30

English Reformed Church

Begijnhof 48 - 1012 WV - Amsterdam

The Mulanje Mission Hospital was founded by Scottish missionaries in the 19th Century and retains its links with the Church of Scotland. It currently provides public health and primary care services to about 80,000 people living in 72 villages in the district of Mulanje, Malawi, officially the 6th poorest country in the world.  Patients from across Mulanje district and much further afield visit the hospital for outpatient, inpatient and HIV/AIDS services.

The English Reformed Church, itself a church of the Church of Scotland, has supported Mulanje Mission Hospital for many years, taking up monthly collections for its work and hosting this annual concert which is always warmly supported by the members of our congregation and their friends and families.

This year we celebrate our 10th annual benefit concert and all the proceeds will be used for the development of a 4-bed High Dependency Unit for surgical and other critically sick patients. In previous years we have been involved in many fund-raising projects to improve conditions at the hospital, including the renovation of the Children’s ward, modernisation of the Labour ward, improvements to the Men’s ward, installing solar panels, improving water supply and sanitation, improving the antenatal ward and providing the laboratory services.

This year’s benefit concert for the Mulanje Mission Hospital will feature Café des Chansons, starring Charlotte Haesen and her Quartet.

Charlotte Haesen, born in Amsterdam in 1987 and raised in the French-speaking part of Belgium, studied jazz vocals at the Amsterdam University of the Arts.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, she sang French chansons at Amsterdam’s Noordermarkt, where she was discovered by viola player Odile Torenbeek.

Odile and Charlotte decided to put together a chanson programme anchored in a string quartet ensemble. Leading arrangers such as Paul Prenen and Wijnand van Klaveren then ‘arranged’ the chansons around Charlotte’s own particular sound.

The next step was the founding of Café des Chansons: Charlotte Haesen plus four musicians from the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.

They perform gems of the repertoire, including the great French classics by figures such as Barbara, Gainsbourg and Piaf.
