Theme second week: “Groningen by bike”.

If you like to go exploring in a sportive way, then this will definitely be something for you!

The province of Groningen is situated at the top right corner of our beautiful country The Netherlands, also known as Holland. The Rotary Club of Winschoten, a town close to the German border, offers you a week packed full with sportive and challenging fun.

Do you like cycling? Well, Groningen is the ideal place to explore by bike, via the countless bike routes.

And even if cycling in itself is still a bit of a challenge for you, we still invite you to come along, as our team is more than willing to teach you how to cycle in a safe and fun manner.

During your 7 day stay with the Rotary Club Winschoten, you will be introduced to the beautiful surroundings, the rich history and a variety of sportive activities. For instance you will explore one of Holland’s best restored forts, Bourtange, by bike. Once in Bourtange, a guide will inform you about its history and daily life in the fort during the 18th century. Your tour will close with a bang from one of Bourtange’s canons!

You will also get the opportunity to walk on the seabed of the Waddensea under the watchful eye of a specialised guide, who will enrich your knowledge of the sea and its secrets. One of the sea’s inhabitants, the seal, sometimes needs help and during this week, you will be able to visit the nationally well known seal-nursery in the very top of Groningen, in a small village named Pieterburen.

During a tour of the capital of Groningen – also known as Groningen – a guide will inform you about the intriguing history of this city. A museum may be visited and you will also get the chance to see the city from quite a different viewpoint through means of a boat tour through the canals.

So far an idea of a few of the activities during this fun packed week, which will come to an appropriate end at the “Night of Winschoten” – a night full of music from live bands, food, market stalls, shopping and a varied programme of activities for all ages in the centre of town.

If this fantastic active week is something for you, then please register and we will look forward to meeting you in Winschoten in July 2010!!
