Samenvatting presentatie Kees Matthijssen

The presentation “Experience from Uruzgan” will provide a more in depth insight in the complex mission that the Dutch armed forces are conducting in Afghanistan. After a short orientation on specifics of Uruzgan province the presentation will focus on the so-called comprehensive approach. This approach is an integrated civil-military approach within the fields of security, governance and development. The operation focuses on these fields in order to support the Afghan authorities and build their capacity towards the future in which they should be able to govern their province on their own and provide security and proper living conditions for its population. In the presentation there will be a clarification on how an adequate level of security is maintained as a precondition to be able to work on governance and development. Within security the development of Afghan security capacity will play an important role. Further governance and development will be discussed as well. Meanwhile the presentation will also focus on the results that have been achieved since the mission started and will also discuss the way progress has been made in the last half year, but also the challenges that remain.
